The formative years

Generation Z, born between 1998 – 2015, has never known a world without the internet or mobile phones. Being born into a globalized and connected world, Generation Z is convinced that anything is possible. They have access to unfiltered information for learning, and an almost intuitive ability to use digital tools.

Globalization and 24/7 connectivity led to exposure to diverse cultures off- and online, allowing them to develop a broader and more global perspective. They are the most diverse generation to date in terms of gender, ethnicity, race, sexuality and religion.

However, despite these advantages, Generation Z also faces anxiety caused by constant exposure to a news cycle that highlights the constant barrage of injustices and global issues that lie far beyond their influence.

Moreover, their Gen X parents taught them practical skills in order to be prepared for the many obstacles in life. In fact, Gen X sees their kids as their new project. This parenting style further contributes to the feelings of insecurity and uncertainty among Gen Z’ers.

Where did this lead to?

Being taught by their Generation X parents the importance of being self-reliant while being exposed to easy access to tools and information, made Gen Z eager to seize opportunities with a ‘Make it happen’ mentality. They easily navigate themselves online and find what they need in order to make things happen. They are an entrepreneurial generation, which results in them being the driving force behind the creator economy.

Globalization and connectivity led to exposure to diverse cultures off- and online this exposure has played a significant role in shaping their worldview and fostering a more Pluralistic mindset: an acceptance and appreciation of diversity, including different cultures, beliefs, and identities. Diversity is seen as something positive that should be embraced, and they love to play with the space this creates. A somewhat ironic side-effect of this mindset is that Generation Z is fiercely intolerant of modern conservative opinions that try to scrutinise or limit their identity expression.

Being taught by their Generation X parents the importance of being critical and down-to-earth led to a Realistic generation; they make cautious choices so they are well-prepared for the future. They are more occupied with studying hard at school to get good grades and build solid work experience. Both to secure their own uncertain futures and to change the world for the better in terms of inclusivity and sustainability.

Generation Z is a realistic generation with a make-it-happen mentality, they are willing to be prepared and change things for the better, using tech as their main asset. They have a pluralistic mindset and are on their way to onboarding the rest of the world to adopt this mindset as well.
